“Our lives are simple. We live the way we were meant to. To take too much from this world is to invoke the Ravager. My people know this. That is why our lives are simple.”
- Chief Var’ouk of the Bird Catchers tribe
Most of the aranea perished with the destruction of their island home. Those that survived were either away from their homeland at the time or extremely lucky. Descendants of the few that returned to their shattered homeland became the Tela Islanders.
To most visitors the Tela Islanders appear to live a simple and carefree existence. They are isolated and appear fairly primitive. Indeed, the Tela Ring would get far fewer visitors if it weren’t for the fact that the islands are the lone producer of Tela Silk. Many have tried to pry the secret of the silk’s creation from the islanders but none have succeeded.
Nearly everything that the villagers own is made from silk. They use it for clothing, and in the construction of their huts and tribal dwellings. A waterproof silk is used in the construction of canoes and outriggers where it is stretched tautly around a rigid wooden frame.
When dealing with visitors the islanders always appear in humanoid form, and in most cases the pleasant façade that the islanders put on is accurate. A few tribes enjoy playing with their visitors and will try to identify their racial makeup from a distance. Only aranea with a matching form will then greet the newcomers, while all of the others stay hidden in the island’s interior. Ship crews of different races who have both visited the same island will argue over hours over the racial stock of the native population. More than one bar has been destroyed over the matter.
